"Lord, I don't ask that I should win, but please, please don't let me finish behind Akabusi."

Editor Mike Hammond, Carlton, 2010. ISBN 978-1-84732-617-1 1120 pages
Another fabulous football book from Carlton. It is a cross between a readable book and a reference guide, complete with 100s of colour photos.
The main section is the 640 page Nation–by-nation explained part which includes all 53 UEFA member countries giving typically - national team appearances, league tables, goal scorers, club by club results and appearances. As comprehensive as Rothmans but for 53 countries!
The World Cup 2010 review is 88 pages of reports, results and statistics including lists of squad and appearances. The 40 page review of the Champions’ League and the 46 pages on the Europa League are followed by a country by country club by club record of the season in European competition. Take Manchester United, for example, and you get the team for each of their 10 Champions’ League games with a table of players used, appearances, goals etc. And the same for every country.
The section on Women’s football is 40 pages covering the UEFA championships at senior, Under 19 and Under 17 as well as the Champions’ League.
Another interesting feature is the choice of top 100 players of year with half page on each – text, stats and a photo.
The book is educational with a map of each of 53 countries, showing the location of all top division clubs, indicating which are in the Champions’ League and the Europa League.
Do you know which city Real Sociedad or Hercules come from and where they are on the map? I do – as of this morning!
A must for the serious connoisseur of European football.
