If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

Gary Player

The Official English Leagues’ Football Records 2011

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 't'.

Carlton Books, 2010. ISBN 978-1-4-84732-614-0

The book in its debut edition is a welcome addition to the books available on football. It contains 256 pages (A4 size) in full colour with 4-5 photos on each double-page spread.

The book includes:

A review of the 2009-10 season.

English League All time records (all four divisions)

History of Cup competitions.

More that half the book consists of the club section with up to 4 pages per club giving history, statistics and fascinating trivia about each club.

The book seems to have struck the right balance between ancient and modern with lots of brilliant modern colour pictures with some golden oldies too. The Manchester United section for example has pictures of Michael Owen, Ronaldo, Best, Cantona, Beckham, Ferguson, Charlton, Bruce, Robson Solskjaer and Sir Matt Busby to portray the club’s successes through the ages.

The book is loaded with trivia, perfect for anyone who wants to run a pub quiz or just entertain themselves on one on those rare but difficult evenings when there is no live footy on TV.

It does not have the comprehensive coverage of the Sky Sports (aka Rothmans) Football Annual but is much more accessible with its short paragraphs highlighting its interesting facts. And it is in colour and with 100s of photos.

A small nitpick, from someone living in Oxford, the club section in a book with “2011” in its title is based on the membership of the Football League in the 2009-10 season so excludes Oxford United.

Overall a great present for the football loving teenager or the football loving senior citizen and anyone in between.
